The education section looks deceptively simple — a few lines — yet it's where many resumes quietly weaken. Done right, it's a clean credential block. Done wrong, it hides your best asset or pads itself into filler.
The Basic Education Entry
The standard format has four pieces:
Bachelor of Business Administration University of Dhaka | 2019–2023 | CGPA 3.6/4.0
Institution, degree, years, and grade — one line each. Reverse-chronological (newest first), consistent formatting, no decoration. That's the whole section in its ideal form.
What to Include — and Drop
Include: degree name, institute, completion years, and a strong grade (CGPA, percentage, division).
Drop: your school's full address, primary/middle schooling once you have higher education, irrelevant extracurricular achievements, and grades that are weak mid-career.
As your career grows, education shrinks to two or three lines and the experience section becomes the center of the resume.
Freshers: Education First
For students and fresh graduates, education is your strongest proof — so it moves up. The order becomes contact, objective/summary, education, projects, skills. Add relevant coursework or thesis if it supports the target role. The complete structure for this stage is in the no-experience resume guide and the freshers guide.
Unfinished Degrees
Never fabricate a degree — background checks catch it, and the resume lies guide shows how costly that becomes. Instead, state exactly what you completed:
- "BSc in Computer Science (3rd year, pursuing) — University of Dhaka"
- "B.Com, 2 years completed — Chandpur College"
An honest partial credential carries far more trust than a fabricated one.
Certifications Alongside Education
Professional certifications — CIMA, CMA, Google, AWS, IELTS — appear either inside education or as their own certifications list. For recent graduates they supplement a short education block; for seniors they often replace coursework as the proof of continuing skill.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I include my GPA?
Include it when it's strong (typically 3.0+ or the local equivalent) and you're a student or recent graduate. Later, experience matters more than the number.
What if I didn't finish my degree?
List what you completed honestly — 'B.Com (2 years, incomplete)' or 'BSc, second year' — with accurate dates. Never invent a degree.
Does education go before experience?
Only for freshers. Experienced candidates place experience first and education below — the standard section order.
Enter your education into the free editor with a clean template, and the section formats itself correctly.
