Writing work experience bullets on a resume

For experienced candidates, the work experience section is the resume. Everything else supports it. A well-structured history with result-driven bullets earns the read — and the interview.

The Role Entry Format

Every role uses the same predictable header:

Senior Software Engineer | TechCorp | Dhaka March 2022 – Present

Title, company, location, dates. That consistent rhythm lets a recruiter scan your whole history in seconds. The section order guide keeps this block right after the summary.

The Bullet Formula

The famous Google X-Y-Z model: Accomplished [X], as measured by [Y], by doing [Z].

In practice, compress it:

  1. Start with a strong action verb.
  2. Name the outcome or scope.
  3. Add the metric or number you can defend.
"Reduced customer response time 40% by introducing a shared ticketing workflow across 3 teams."

Action, result, method — a line that proves value instead of listing duties.

Before and After

Before (duty):

"Responsible for monthly sales reports."

After (achievement):

"Produced weekly sales analytics that flagged declining accounts early, cutting churn 12% in two quarters."

The difference is verbs, results, and numbers. Our action verbs guide gives you the replacement list, and the detail balance guide shows how much is enough per line.

How Many Bullets Per Role

Three to five per job. The current or most relevant role may take five; older ones shrink to three, then to one line each by the 10-year mark and beyond. Never start two consecutive bullets with the same verb.

Gaps, Short Stints, and Old Jobs

  • Gaps: keep dates honest and explain in the interview; the employment gap guide has the phrasing.
  • Short stints: present them accurately; recruiters value honesty over tidy timelines.
  • Old jobs: compress to a line once they fall ~10 years back. Fresh relevance beats full biography.
