The photo question is the most culture-dependent decision on a resume. In one region a headshot is expected; in another it quietly gets your application filtered out. The rule is not "yes or no" — it is "where are you applying?"
The Global Photo Rules
The deciding factor is the target market, not your preference:
- Europe (Germany, France, Switzerland) and parts of Asia: photos are common and conventionally expected.
- South Asia (Bangladesh, India, Pakistan): a professional headshot is normal and often expected.
- US, Canada, UK, and Australia: employers can't legally use looks in hiring, and photos are normally omitted.
- Middle East: common, follow the local convention.
Match the norm of the employer's country — not your own habit.
Where Photos Are Expected
Germany and France are the classic photo-expecting markets; the CVs there routinely open with a headshot in the header. Across South Asia, banks, garments, and retail recruitment typically expect a professional photo. When applying to those markets, include one — it signals that you understand local conventions.
Where Photos Are Taboo
In the US, Canada, UK, and Australia, a resume photo raises discrimination concerns: if your photo influences the decision, the employer opens legal exposure, so many simply delete photo-resumes early. If you are applying internationally alongside our international resume guide, know that "no photo" wins in the Anglosphere.
What a Professional Headshot Looks Like
If a photo goes on the resume, it must look hired already:
- Plain, light-neutral background.
- Business or smart-casual attire; no beach or party photos.
- Shoulders-up framing, camera at eye level, neutral or slight smile.
- Good lighting, no filters, no selfie angle, no sunglasses.
A bad photo is worse than no photo. Use a friend, a clean wall, and natural light.
Photo Placement and Size
When including a photo, keep it small and out of the way: a passport-sized rectangle at the top (aligned with the header) or the top-right corner. Never let it overlap text. Keep body text plain around it, so both the reader and the parser keep flowing. The header placement rules are in the resume header guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a photo required on a resume?
Never required anywhere. It is conventional in parts of Europe and Asia, but no professional employer insists on it, and in many countries employers legally can't ask.
Should I use a selfie or a group photo?
No. If a photo goes on a resume, it must be a dedicated professional headshot — plain background, business attire, neutral expression.
Does a photo affect ATS parsing?
Only if the photo is placed over, behind, or near text such that it corrupts extraction. A photo at the top corner with text elsewhere parses fine.
